Since mid-August we have been running scheduled visibility checks across a portfolio of 32 websites we operate — more than 3,600 stored checks so far — to answer a blunt question: when Google shows an AI Overview for a query in your niche, does it cite you?

The headline result is uncomfortable, and worth stating plainly: 28 of the 32 sites recorded zero AI Overview citations on the queries we track for them. Traffic reports across the industry keep showing clicks migrating into AI answers; our own data says most ordinary content sites simply do not exist inside those answers.

Four sites did earn citations. What they have in common is more useful than the score itself.

What actually got cited

These are live Google AI Overview observations from our monitoring window (August 2026) — the query we tracked, and the page Google’s AI Overview cited:

  • A cross-culture comparison hub — for questions like “How do I learn about mythological creatures from different cultures?”, the AI Overview cited a category hub that compares creatures across cultures — not an individual article. The aggregation page beat every single-topic post on the site.
  • An audience-specific how-to — for a query about voice control that is easy for retirees to operate, the citation went to a guide written specifically for seniors. The generic “best smart speakers” pages nearby were passed over.
  • A tested comparison“Best smart home hub” cited a hands-on hub comparison, and an emergency-prep query cited a practical prep guide.
  • Intent-matching guides — two “book recommendations by mood” guides on a small books site earned AI Overview citations for adult-fiction recommendation queries.
  • Local cost guides — on a local services site, “How much does yard cleanup cost in Lexington SC?” and the equivalent mulching query both cited the site’s specific cost-guide pages. Concrete numbers, named locality.

The pattern

Across every citation we observed, the cited page did one of four things:

  1. Compared things side by side (hubs and tested comparisons, not single reviews)
  2. Named its audience in the page itself (“for seniors”, “for adults”)
  3. Answered a cost question with actual figures and a locality
  4. Matched a searcher’s intent structure (“by mood”, “across cultures”) rather than a keyword

Meanwhile, the 28 invisible sites are not thin or broken — several rank respectably in classic organic results. They are invisible because their pages answer topics, while AI Overviews appear to reward pages that answer questions with structure: comparisons, audiences, numbers, and intent.

Methodology, honestly

Receipts in this article are live Google AI Overview observations captured from real result pages during August 2026, tied to specific tracked queries. Our tooling also models how retrieval-based assistants (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and others) would treat the same pages; those modeled results informed our analysis but are not presented here as observed citations, because they are estimates. Visibility is point-in-time: AI answers change, and a citation observed one week can vanish the next. Sample sizes per site are small (typically 6–70 tracked queries); treat the pattern, not any single score, as the finding.

What we’re doing next

We are restructuring pages on the invisible 28 along the four patterns above, and we will publish follow-up data as the checks accumulate — including the failures. If AI answers are becoming the front page of the internet, the only honest way to learn the rules is to measure, change one thing, and measure again.
